Chantelle Cameron reveals Mikaela Mayer concern as British star targets Claressa Shields super-fight

Chantelle Cameron is refusing to get too carried away as she attempts to land a lucrative and potentially career-defining super-fight with Claressa Shields.

The Northampton-born star produced a clinical performance to outpoint Mikaela Mayer in their blockbuster super-welterweight unification world title showdown last weekend.

Cameron signalled her immediate intentions of landing a colossal clash with the unbeaten Shields immediately after her points success in Birmingham, with her promoter wasting no time in reaching out to the GWOAT's representatives.

However, the 35-year-old knows that she may have to shelve her hopes of trading leather with Shields, at least for the time being, with three-weight world champion Mayer expected to trigger her rematch clause in the coming weeks.

"There is that risk [of Mayer demanding an immediate rematch] because it’s obviously boxing, isn’t it?," she told Boxing News.

"If the shoe was on the other foot, I would’ve had to potentially wait for her to box Claressa Shields.

But Mikaela Mayer didn’t win – I won, so it’s winner stays on. And Claressa Shields has said she wants to fight me. [Mayer will] have the rematch, but she can wait.

Whether the former US Olympian will wait remains to be seen, but it appears unlikely.

Mayer claimed she felt hard done by with all three judges scoring the bout in Cameron's favour, and even stormed the Briton's post-fight press conference to speak of her grievances.

Cameron however, unsurprisingly possesses a different view and feels the manner of her victory was even more comprehensive than she expected.

"I thought it was going to be a harder fight, if I’m honest," she added.

"I do think some of the rounds were close but, physically, I felt like the stronger woman. I was catching her with some big shots and I think she felt my power."
