Championship play-offs picture: Coventry and Millwall in line for final two berths

Although Luton and Middlesbrough have already sewn up their places in the Championship play-offs, a total of five teams are still battling it out to join them in the hunt for Premier League promotion.

With Vincent Kompany's Burnley having been crowned champions and Sheffield United scooping the second automatic promotion spot, attention now turns to the play-off battle in the Championship with only one more pathway to the Premier League remaining.

Luton Town and Middlesbrough have already confirmed their position in the play-offs with three games to spare in third and fourth place respectively, while the last two remaining spots are still up for grabs.

Coventry City will almost certainly fill one of them, with the Sky Blues' 2-0 win over Birmingham City meaning only a significant goal difference swing can deny them a place in the play-offs on the final day.

The last play-off spot looks far more open, with just two points separating Millwall in sixth and Blackburn Rovers in ninth in the Championship.

We examine the hopes of each of the five teams still in the running for the play-offs and their odds of achieving promotion...

5th place - Coventry City (69 points)

Latest Outright odds:

To Finish in Top 6 - 1/10
To be Promoted - 4/1

Mark Robins' Coventry City are now 1/6 to finish in the play-offs following a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Birmingham City, with the Sky Blues unbeaten in their last six matches ahead of their trip to face Middlesbrough on the final day.

24-year-old Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres has been a talismanic figure for Coventry this season, with his 21 league goals seeing him recognised in the Championship Team of the Season and nominated for the best player gong.

Last participating in the Premier League way back in 2000-01, Coventry supporters will be desperate to return to the big time via the play-offs this summer.

FixtureDate
Middlesbrough (a)8th May

6th place - Millwall (68 points)

Latest Outright odds:

To Finish in Top 6 - 8/13
To be Promoted - 7/1

Millwall have been there or thereabouts with regards to the play-off picture all season, but the Lions have dropped off in recent weeks having won just one of their last seven Championship matches prior to their battling 3-2 victory at Blackpool.

These three points at Bloomfield Road have revived Gary Rowett's men's play-off hopes ahead of a decisive final showdown against Blackburn, with Rovers also still in contention for a top six finish.

Promotion for Millwall would see them compete in the Premier League for the very first time, and reunite with fierce local rivals West Ham in the top-flight.

Remaining fixture:

FixtureDate
Blackburn Rovers (h)8th May

7th place - Sunderland (66 points)

Latest Outright odds:

To Finish in Top 6 - 9/4
To be Promoted - 12/1

In what has been an up-and-down season for Sunderland following their promotion from League One, the Black Cats have hit form at the perfect time to put themselves firmly in the race for a play-off place.

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray, who replaced Alex Neil in August, has helped inspire his charges to a run of just one defeat in their last 10 matches to give the Wearsiders a shot of back-to-back promotions.

Sunderland are currently fifth in the Championship form table across the past six games, and will need to carry this momentum into their final match of the season away to Preston if they wish to seal a much-craved play-offs spot.

Remaining fixture:

FixtureDate
Preston (a)8th May

8th place - West Brom (66 points)

Latest Outright odds:

To Finish in Top 6 - 9/2
To be Promoted - 16/1

In their second season back in the Championship since being relegated from the top flight in 2021, West Brom have enjoyed a revival in fortunes since Steve Bruce was replaced by Carlos Corberan back in October.

Previously languishing at the bottom end of the table under the auspices of ex-Newcastle ands Aston Villa boss Bruce, Corberan has now built a side capable of challenging for promotion.

A grinding 2-1 win over Norwich City has breathed new life into the Baggies' promotion quest, and a victory away to Swansea City on the final day would give them a chance to sneak into the play-offs.

Remaining fixture:

FixtureDate
Swansea City (a)8th May

9th place - Blackburn Rovers (66 points)

Latest Outright odds:

To Finish in Top 6 - 7/1
To be Promoted - 33/1

Blackburn Rovers are another team to have suffered a major drop-off in form at the business end of the season, with Jon Dahl Tomasson's side having failed to win in their last eight Championship matches.

Despite their recent struggle for points, Blackburn still have an outside chance of salvaging their play-off hopes on the final day of the season away at Millwall, with a win enough to elevate themselves above the Lions.

Chile international forward Ben Brereton-Diaz will be central to their hopes, with the 24-year-old having notched 14 goals in all competitions this term.

Remaining fixture:

FixtureDate
Millwall (a)8th May
