Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed he will not take part in the Madrid Open after failing to recover from an injury.
The world number three sustained hamstring and groin injuries during the Barcelona Open final - but says he is hopeful of being fit for a defence of his French Open title.
Alcaraz injured himself during the second set of Sunday's match against Holger Rune but was able to resume play.
Unfortunately for the Spaniard, he went on to lose 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.
Speaking on his Madrid withdrawal Alcaraz said, "In a week or two I shall return to training, but I will take it step by step.
"I couldn't practice the entire week. I needed to listen to my body and make the right decision.
"I don't want to get too far ahead but I hope I shall be ready for the French Open."
Before a trip to Paris, Alcaraz is hoping to contest the Italian Open that begins on May 6th.
The 21-year-old remains favourite to retain his French Open title but fans will be hoping he can prove his health prior to the second grand slam event of the season.
