Our resident boxing insider Rob Tebbutt looks ahead to Saturday night's bill-topping bout between British & Commonwealth super-middleweight champion Callum Simpson and Steed Woodall, and explains where he feels the betting value can be found.
Callum Simpson and Steed Woodall kick off British boxing in 2025 when they meet in Sheffield this Saturday night.
Barnsley’s Simpson established himself as one of the UK’s brightest prospects in 2024, picking up the British & Commonwealth titles last time out with a resounding unanimous decision victory over Zak Chelli.
Simpson now makes his first defence against an in-form Woodall, who himself is coming off of the biggest win of his career, a sixth round stoppage of Lerrone Richards in June of last year, and will be confident of springing the upset on Saturday night.
I think this is a fight that Simpson must remain switched on at all times, with Woodall showing how dangerous he can be in his win over Richards and Simpson’s willingness to trade and be aggressive.
I do feel Simpson is a rightful favourite, but this could prove to be the toughest challenge of his career so far.
Woodall has only lost twice, both by decision to fringe-world level opponents in Steve Rolls and Padraig McCrory, and I think he’s experienced and capable enough to see the final bell this weekend.
