Despite questions about his suitability to be the Manchester United captain with critics pointing towards his demeanour and inability to hide his frustrations, no player has been as influential as the Portuguese at Old Trafford since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Fernandes covers every blade of grass, is a virtual never-present and demands the best from those around him. Despite that, this summer may be a good time to move the 29-year-old on. Fernandes will be 30 in September, and under the new direction of INEOS, United may be looking to rebuild.
Although there are players on big wages who might not be there next season, there aren’t many opportunities for the club to raise funds – something they’ll need to do if they indeed plan on a short-term rebuild – with Fernandes one of their most valuable players.
An exit therefore may suit both club and player, with Fernandes reportedly growing frustrated at the club’s malaise.
The most obvious destination at the moment appears to be Bayern Munich. Former boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly wanted the club to sign a playmaker as well as a defensive midfielder and, whether new manager Vincent Kompany is also shopping in a similar department, Fernandes would be a significant upgrade on the ageing Thomas Muller and the unsuitable Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
