NFL - US Sports: Browns could let Landry leave after Cooper trade

The Cleveland Browns will reportedly allow Jarvis Landry to seek a trade after cutting a deal with the Dallas Cowboys to acquire fellow wide receiver Amari Cooper on Saturday.

The Browns, who are 3/1 to win the AFC North next season, are revamping their receiving corps after a tumultuous 2021 campaign that marked the end of Odell Beckham Jr's time in Cleveland.

Browns make Cooper move

Although the trade cannot be finalised until the new league year begins this coming Wednesday, the Browns took advantage of their cap situation to jump in ahead of any rivals who needed to clear house before taking on the next three years of Cooper's contract.

The move, which had appeared on the cards since Dallas owner Jerry Jones expressed frustration in Cooper's 2021 season during a January radio appearance, frees up $16 million in cap space for the Cowboys heading into free agency.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported last week that the Cowboys intended to release the wide receiver if a suitable trading partner didn't emerge, although he later added that the NFC East team had spent the week fielding calls from interested parties.

The 27-year-old caught just 68 passes for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season, but he instantly upgrades a Browns receiver group that might be losing Landry any day.

Landry future not certain

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo last night reported that the Browns' front office had granted the ex-Miami Dolphins star permission to seek a trade - although Landry remains open to remaining in Cleveland.

However, Garafolo stated that if Landry was to return for another season in the Forest City, it would probably need him to take a pay cut on his $14.3 million projected earnings in 2022.
