While the centre of conversations remains as to whether Tyson Fury will make a sensational return to the ring, George Groves believes the Gypsy King should consider stepping into the cage for a bout in MMA.
Tyson Fury has been dropping hint after hint that a return to boxing may be on the cards.
First, a cryptic social media post working on the punch bag and now a return for the esteemed boxing trainer SugarHill.
While the Gypsy King is known for his light-hearted antics, rumours of a huge fight with Anthony Joshua are not disappearing.
Fury is prone to a return to the ring following a proclaimed retirement, but the boxing world thought it may be for good this time following consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
The ball seems to be in Fury’s court with regard to an eagerly anticipated bout with Joshua, with Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn stating that it “all comes down to Tyson” and Queensbury promoter Frank Warren proclaiming “it’s up to Tyson” when speaking to Sky Sports.
Former super-middleweight champions George Groves has a different outlook on the matter however, instead promoting a rematch with Francis Ngannou in MMA.
When speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
I'd like to see Fury do MMA. I want to see him fight [Francis] Ngannou in the cage. Seriously.
"I'm not interested in the boxing anymore. He's done fantastic things within his boxing career but he can't beat Usyk and I don't think it suits him to be playing for runner-up.
"If you're going to take your time and not make the Joshua fight, then fight Ngannou in the cage."
While an all-British fight with Joshua is seemingly what the public desire, an MMA debut against one of the sport’s most feared men would undoubtedly provide entertainment.
Fury and Ngannou went toe-to-toe in the ring in October 2023, and many contested a split decision victory for the Gypsy King.
Reports of an alleged rematch in MMA seem to have faded given the interest in Fury v Joshua, but the spontaneity of Fury means very little can be ruled out.
