Boxing great and Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya has claimed that Ryan Garcia v Devin Haney 'doesn't merit a rematch' after respectively poor performances last time out.
Garcia made his long-awaited return to the ring at Times Square on 2nd May, participating on the same card as long-term rival Haney.
Neither Garcia or Haney particularly impressed on the night, but while Garcia fell to defeat against Rolando Romero, Haney was able to come out on top in a unanimous decision victory over Jose Ramirez.
Talk of a rematch between the pair was expectedly high before the fight, but Garcia’s promoter and former boxing great Oscar De La Hoya has seemingly shut down any talk of a second clash in the near future.
When speaking to Fight Hype, De La Hoya was asked whether the rematch with Haney is the direction that Garcia’s camp want to go with.
No, that’s not the direction we want to go. Zero, whatsoever.

“I’ve sat down with him (Garcia) already and he’s in great spirits. We’re actually looking forward to the future and we’re going to nail down exactly what the plans are going to be and put it in play.”
When questioned on the possibility of a rematch with Romero, De La Hoya said: “Speaking to you as a fighter, not a promoter, that’s exactly what I would do. That would be the right move for him, I think. Go and get revenge.”
Below par performances from the pair has meant that the narrative surrounding Garcia v Haney 2 has significantly shifted in recent weeks. A fight that previously felt inevitable is viewed by many as unnecessary at this stage.
De La Hoya shares the same opinion, adding: “It just doesn’t merit a rematch.
“Devin actually lost, you know, winning. His stock is super down. I’m just stating facts here.
“People are talking about him just being a runner, not a boxer. This guy’s a runner.”
