Making weight is the 'most dangerous part of boxing' says Anthony Yarde

Anthony Yarde is set to go toe-to-toe with Lyndon Arthur for a third time on Saturday 26th April, fighting on the undercard of the Chris Eubank Jr v Conor Benn fight.

It’s a third fight between Yarde and Arthur that seems long overdue, having last stepped in the ring together in December 2021. One win apiece, the long-standing feud will draw to a close on Saturday night.

While Yarde’s trilogy with Arthur should by no means be undermined, Yarde himself knows the significance of the headlining fight on the night, hailing Eubank Jr v Benn a “fascinating matchup.”

A major talking point surrounding the main event is that both Eubank and Benn are having to make weight adjustments in order to assure the fight will go on.

Whilst Benn will be stepping up a couple of weight classes to fight at middleweight for the first time in his career, former super-middleweight star Eubank Jr will be cutting weight as well as having to abide by strict rehydration stipulations.

When speaking to talkSPORT, Anthony Yarde spoke on whether putting on, or cutting weight is more of a challenge.

More dangerous? Cutting, 100%.

“It’s been evident in boxing history and that’s why there’s so many rules. We’ve got to do check weigh-ins now because of fighters in the past taking off too much weight.

“This is a statistic – I don’t think a lot of heavyweights have passed weight from boxing. It’s usually the lighter weights and that’s because of the weight-making process.

“They (fighters of a higher weight class) go out there, they strip themselves of making weight, they go out there not being their best self and it is very, very dangerous.

I think that’s the most dangerous part of boxing, making weight.

Despite Yarde’s confession regarding the dangerous impact cutting weight can have, he denied that Conor Benn will have an advantage as a result of Eubank Jr’s cut.

He added: “I wouldn’t say that (Benn has an advantage). With this particular fight, it’s a weight that Chris Eubank has done before. The only thing that may not benefit him is the rehydration clause.

“I just hope we get a great fight for both of them."
