It’s crazy to think that the career of Jaime Munguia could be hanging by a thread should he lose to Bruno Surace once again.

The Mexican powerhouse was on the receiving end of the biggest upset in 2024 when the Frenchman defied odds, expectations and more or less every single prediction across the boxing community when he won by sixth round knockout in Mexico.

But on Saturday 3rd May, will Munguia get his revenge or will Surace shock the world once again?

Before we find out, let's take a look at the 'Tale of the Tape'.

Jaime Munguia - In Profile

After a Fight of the Year contender victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June 2023 and a dominant performance to end the career of John Ryder seven months later, Jaime Munguia was at the peak of his powers.

All that was missing was a world title.

Reaching one peak wasn’t enough for the Mexican to succeed, however. Up above stood the formidable super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez who proved superior to his compatriot in May 2024.

On the way down Munguia returned to winning ways with an expected victory over Erik Bazinyan but then came the drop off a cliff when Bruno Surace knocked him out in front of his own fans in December.

Munguia’s career is now at a crossroads. His fighting style and popularity make him must-watch but another loss to Surace will not only affect his title ambitions it will hit him in the pocket as well.

Just like Julio Cesar Chavez against Frankie Randall and Juan Manuel Marquez against Manny Pacquiao, Mexican fighters have proved that when the pressure is on they can deliver redemption and revenge by winning in a rematch (in Marquez’s case at the fourth attempt).

The difference with those, however, was that they were up against world class operators.

Surace may or may not be one, but if Munguia can’t beat him at the second attempt, in an undercard bout, in May, then his career will go into freefall.

Bruno Surace - In Profile

Not only did Bruno Surace walk into the lion’s den to face Jaime Munguia last year but he also recovered from a knockdown to win in Tijuana.

The magnitude of the win should not be lost on anyone.

The atmosphere will be much more subdued when Surace enters the ring in Riyadh to face Munguia.

His career is on the rise, however, and the man from Marseille goes into this rematch knowing, crucially, he can take Munguia’s best and stand with him and trade.

It may just be that fighting away from home where everyone expected Munguia to demolish Surace could suit the Mexican rather than the Frenchman.

Surace’s best hope is to exploit any mistakes by Munguia and any recklessness where his opponent tries too hard, particularly if the fight is not going his way.

The difference this time is Munguia will have the skills and experience of Eddy Reynoso in his corner.

Canelo’s trusted manager and trainer can put the fire out on any heat Munguia brings on himself and ensure that he stays disciplined and follows his instructions. That factor alone makes the difference.
