Bolton target deal for Japanese international midfielder

Bolton Wanderers are exploring a deal to sign Japanese midfielder Atsuki Ito from Belgian side Gent.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has reported that the Championship club are lining up a move for the player before the end of the transfer window.

Ito moved to Belgium in the summer of 2024 from Urawa Red Diamonds in the J-League.

The 28-year-old has made 79 appearances across all competitions for the Belgian side, scoring seven goals.

However, he has been unable to add to the three caps that he has earned with the Japan national team since his move.

Championship

Bolton are expected to be busy in the remaining days of the summer transfer window as Steven Schumacher fine tunes his squad.

The Trotters were promoted from League One last season and they will be looking to stabilise themselves in the second-tier.

Schumacher's side have made a solid start on their return to the Championship after beating Preston North End on the opening day, before drawing at Queens Park Rangers last weekend.

Bolton are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host another newly-promoted team in the form of Lincoln City.
