Bolton v Reading: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Bolton host Reading in a key League One game in the EFL on Monday and we have the latest betting odds and predictions for the match.

Wanderers are third in the standings and can't afford to slip up after falling six points behind Derby in the race for automatic promotion, while Reading have eased their relegation fears by winning their last two games at home but are still only six points above the danger zone.

Bolton v Reading betting tips and predictions

Bolton -1 on goal handicap – 7/5

Bolton will be frustrated to have dropped off the pace in the hunt for a top-two finish in League One as Portsmouth and Derby have pulled clear after the Trotters dropped points in their last two league games.

However, Wanderers have won six of their last eight home league games and have a decent opportunity to get back on track against a Reading team who have struggled on the road.

The Royals have earned 11 of their 14 league wins this season at the Select Car Leasing Stadium and a mediocre record of three wins, five draws and 11 defeats in away games doesn't inspire hope in them upsetting a top-three team.

In contrast, Bolton have won 13 of their 19 home league matches, losing only three times in front of their own fans. They have had four home wins and two draws since their last home league loss, which was to Premier League Luton in the FA Cup in January.

The Trotters' players will be happy to be at home for once having played only two of their last nine games in Horwich, and they were both comfortable successes as Cambridge were beaten 2-0 and play-off contenders Oxford were thumped 5-0.

Bolton have played three successive games against top-eight teams and should find this an easier test.

While Reading have eased their worries with back-to-back wins, the first was against a poor Cambridge team and they were fortunate to come away with all three points in Friday's 1-0 home win against Northampton, who had eight shots on target compared to the Royals' two.

Take Bolton to score a comfortable home win by more than one goal to sustain their promotion challenge.

Over 2.5 goals – 4/6

Bolton have not scored in their last two games and have conceded only once in those matches, but their home games are normally far more entertaining and there have been 64 goals scored in their 19 matches in front of their own fans this year.

That's 3.37 goals per game and there should be at least three when they take on Reading.

Bolton are the second-highest scorers in League One this season, with their 71 goals bettered only by Peterborough (75) and they are no strangers to high-scoring games.

Before their tight battles against tough teams in Derby and Stevenage, Bolton's previous three games had produced four, four and five goals and Reading are capable of contributing to the total too even if it's in a losing effort.

The Royals have found the net in their last 14 games and five of their last six matches have featured over 2.5 goals.

Friday's game against Northampton finished 1-0 but there could have been more goals for both teams with Reading goalkeeper Joel Pereira making some great saves to deny Louis Appere and Sam Hoskins, while the Royals were wasteful in front of goal, with 11 of their 13 attempts being off-target.

Paris Maghoma anytime goalscorer – 15/4

Bolton are a team who share the goals around, which was illustrated when they had nine consecutive different scorers in their three recent games against Barnsley, Exeter and Oxford.

One of those scorers was midfielder Paris Maghoma, who is on a season-long loan from Premier League Brentford and has become a key figure in Ian Evatt's team.

Maghoma has already chipped in eight goals this season and is relishing a relatively free role which allows him to get into some advanced positions and get shots away.

At 15/4 to score at any time in the game he looks a value option to get on the scoresheet on Monday.
