Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic lock horns in a vital encounter in Lancashire on Monday night as new Latics boss Shaun Maloney prepares for his first game in the managerial hot seat.

The carrot of a spot back within the playoff positions is the reward for the home side if they can ignite life back into their stuttering campaign, whilst Wigan (14/5) will be hoping their former midfielder can provide a new manager bounce as they bid to escape the relegation trapdoor.

Rovers (1/1) were the early season pace-setters after winning their opening three league matches, and whilst they have continued to flirt with the top two spots for long parts of the campaign, a poor run of form has since seen them drift away from the automatic promotion picture.

Having registered four straight wins in October, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side have notched just three victories from their subsequent 13 fixtures, with their last league success coming against Cardiff City on New Year’s Day.

However, they have a seemingly ideal opportunity of addressing that alarming run of form on Monday against a Wigan side who are winless in nine and, for many, appear destined to head back down to League One.

The Latics have struggled for form and consistency since winning promotion last term, with the board having already dispensed of both Leam Richardson and Kolo Toure as they search for a steady head to help steer a side priced at 4/7 to be relegated, clear of danger.

It's Maloney who has been tasked with doing just that after the former Arsenal and Manchester City defender was dismissed just two months into his reign after failing to win any of his nine matches in charge.

The former Hibernian boss, who won the FA Cup during his spell as a player at the DW Stadium, has an almighty job on his hands though, with his new charges having won just one of their last 17 outings – a 2-1 triumph over Blackpool on home soil three months ago.

Ironically, that was the last time the side managed to score more than a single goal in a game, although it can be said that Blackburn have been equally as inefficient in recent times too, scoring twice in just one of their last nine outings; a four-goal ding-dong battle with Birmingham City last month.

It means that goals could be hard to come by at Ewood Park on Monday evening, although Rovers, 11/1 to win promotion this season, can take confidence from the fact that a clearly fragile Wigan boast the leakiest backline in the Championship, with no other side conceding more than their 49.

As always, we’re offering a number of Boosted markets ahead of kick-off, including a 17/2 chance on Rovers rediscovering their goal scoring touch and inflicting yet more pain upon their struggling Championship rivals.
