Blackburn Rovers are reportedly pondering a move for out of contract goalkeeper Jack Thompson following his summer release from Championship rivals Derby County.
The highly-regarded 19-year-old is on the lookout for a new club after discussions with the Rams over an extended agreement seemingly reached an impasse last month.
Whilst Derby have made no official announcement of his release, it's believed the stopper has bid farewell to his teammates with Blackburn now amongst a cluster of clubs weighing-up a move, according to EFL transfer guru Alan Nixon.
The Ewood Park outfit, who are back under the guidance of former boss Tony Mowbray, are bracing themselves for serious interest in current number one Balazs Toth, with the Hungarian on the transfer wishlists of a number of clubs around the continent.
Whilst Mowbray is reportedly wanting to bring in a more experienced replacement for Toth, the club could be tempted to take a chance on the rookie who has spent his entire youth career at Pride Park.
Thompson has been a starting regular throughout the varying youth teams during his time in the East Midlands and has experienced senior football in the shape of loan spells at non-league level with Kettering Town, Alfreton Town, Worcester City and Braintree Town.
Rovers' interest in Thompson, and other goalkeeping targets, is believed to have been stepped up over the past few days after news broke of Toth's decision to turn down a new deal.
The 28-year-old's existing contract is set to expire next summer and rather than risk losing him for nothing, there is a growing expectation that they will look to cash in on him before the closure of the current transfer window.
The six-time Hungarian international impressed last season as Rovers just about retained their Championship status, making 35 appearances in all competition after arriving from Fehervar the previous summer.
