To Win Outright

Despite renewed optimism reverberating around St Andrew's last summer following the takeover by American investment company Knighthead Capital, the 2023/24 campaign was a tumultuous one for Birmingham, who had as many as six different faces in the dugout before eventually suffering relegation on the final day.

John Eustace was harshly sacked in October with the club 5th in the Championship standings and his successor Wayne Rooney endured a miserable 83-day stint, winning just two matches from 15 as the Blues plummeted into relegation trouble.

There were green shoots of recovery when Tony Mowbray was appointed in January, only for the former Blackburn and Sunderland boss to temporarily step down from his role a month later to undergo surgery.

Mowbray's assistant Mark Venus deputised in his absence, but the new Birmingham board were soon scrambling for an interim managerial option following a dismal run of five defeats in six matches.

Gary Rowett stepped in and despite a four-game unbeaten run to conclude the season, Birmingham were relegated.

Mowbray subsequently confirmed he will not be returning to the dugout after choosing to focus on his recovery and the Blues have now turned to Tottenham senior assistant coach Chris Davies to be the man that will establish an identity, instil a winning culture and take the club forward.

The Birmingham job marks Davies' first managerial position having accumulated 14 years of experience as an assistant to Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City, Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City, before teaming up with Ange Postecoglou at Spurs in June 2023.

Davies is expected to oversee a major squad revamp and it's expected Birmingham will have one of the league's biggest budgets as they look to reinforce in the summer transfer window.

Only 17 senior players are currently on the books and some are likely to pique the interest of other clubs; it will be intriguing to see whether Birmingham are able to retain the services of highly-rated Jordan James and the versatile Krystian Bielik.

There's a strong core for the new manager to work with and a collection of individuals that can excel at the level.

Birmingham are 3/1 favourites to win the league title and as short as 10/11 to seal promotion back to the Championship.

They've taken a bold approach with their managerial appointment and the Blues will be hoping Davies can replicate the success of first-time managers Kieran McKenna and John Mousinho in the third tier.
