Birmingham City are now 11/10 to be relegated from the Championship after they were condemned to their sixth defeat in seven matches by Cardiff City on Wednesday.
Josh Bowler's second half strike was the difference in a low-quality affair where clear-cut opportunities were far and far between.
The result leaves Birmingham in 23rd, one point adrift of safety with four matches to play.
In a season that had promised so much, Birmingham have lacked continuity with four managerial changes, the latest seeing Gary Rowett installed on an interim basis while Tony Mowbray recovers from an operation.
Rowett previously managed Birmingham from 2014 to 2016 but his return has failed to galvanise the current group of players, having picked up just three points from a possible 12 since his appointment.
The Blues' form since the end of February is even bleaker, accumulating just four points from 10 matches. Goals have been scarce, with just four goals scored in their last eight league matches, of which on-loan forward Jay Stansfield has scored two.
There is still a room for optimism, though. Birmingham still have to play basement side Rotherham United, who have already been relegated, before they encounter Huddersfield Town in a season-defining content at the John Smith's Stadium in their penultimate match.
Those two fixtures are sandwiched between home matches against play-off chasing Coventry City and Norwich City.
Birmingham have not been in the third tier of English football since 1992.
