Setting the scene...

Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Rob Cross, Luke Humphries, Dimitri Van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall are the eight players picked by the PDC and they are joined by eight North American performers in the bet365 US Darts Masters.

Alex Spellman won the CDC Continental Cup to book his place at the iconic Madison Square Garden, while former Lakeside runner-up Jeff Smith is also in the field.

North American Tour Card holders Matt Campbell and Jules van Dongen are in the field and they are joined by CDC Cross-Border Challenge winner Jim Long and qualifiers Jake Macmillan, JT Davis and Jason Brandon.

Smith is the defending champion, having beaten recent Premier League winner Van Gerwen in the final and those two arrowsmiths are on course for a second-round Big Apple clash.

Gerwyn Price to win the bet365 US Darts Masters @ 12/5

The draw looks key in New York, and the fact that Michael Smith and Van Gerwen are housed in the same half, and could be destined for a second-round clash, makes looking to the second section the obvious play.

Peter Wright arrives in the Big Apple in pretty poor form, Nathan Aspinall has been struggling for some time and Luke Humphries looks to have a tough first-round game against Alex Spellman.

Gerwyn Price is favourite to reign in New York, and from the weaker bottom half, looks the value bet.

The Iceman has been putting up numbers as good as anyone on tour this season and it was much the same in the Premier League.

Of course, he was beaten in the final by Mighty Mike, but that was a one-off game and, as a collective, the Markham man has been the more consistent and impressive performer.

Wright, Humphries and Aspinall all have major questions to answer and they all look to face far tougher first-round ties than Price.

Henry Hardwicke's Tip:

The Iceman kicks off against Missouri-based Dutchman Jules van Dongen in round one and an average of 88 won’t be anywhere near enough to trouble the imposing Price.

The Welshman could make comfortable progress though his section of the draw and looks worth backing at 12/5 to go all the way, with his top-half rivals likely to have a few battle scars when arriving in the final.

Alex Spellman +2.5 legs v Luke Humphries @ 6/5

Spellman is an impressive performer and his numbers on the CDC Tour suggest he could at least keep tabs on Humphries.

The American is averaging 92.97 in CDC events this season, and while Humphries is a good few clicks above that, Cool Hand Luke will have to deal with a lively home crowd.

Henry Hardwicke's Tip:

Spellman won the CDC Continental Cup to qualify for the bet365 US Darts Masters, defeating Jason Brandon 7-5 with a 95.78 average in the final, and a repeat of those numbers should see the American reward handicap backers at 6/5.

Under 3.5 180s in Dimitri van den Bergh v JT Davis @ 5/6

Van den Bergh is a frequent 180 hitter, when finding his stride, but the DreamMaker may not have too many legs to strike in his first-round tie with JT Davis.

The Belgian is 1/7 to beat Davis and it’s reasonable to think that Van den Bergh may only get six or seven legs to make a maximum mark.

Henry Hardwicke's Tip:

Davis’ numbers on the CDC circuit aren’t awful, but this is a huge occasion for the Springfield man and the 180s total may not get much assistance from the American.

Davis is hitting a maximum on only 1.1% of his scoring visits on the CDC Tour this term, those are pretty barren numbers, and backing under 3.5 180s at 5/6 looks a play.
