Luke Humphries reigned supreme 12 months ago, capturing the crown for the first time courtesy of an 8-5 victory over Nathan Aspinall in the final, and he will be desperately hoping to flex his tungsten muscle in the Big Apple once more.
The former World Darts Championship winner sits second on the pre-tournament betting, with only his long-term darting adversary Luke Littler possessing shorter odds.
The pair teamed-up to devastating effect to capture the World Cup of Darts title in Frankfurt earlier this month in the unique doubles format event, but they could very well be colliding on the oche over the weekend in search of their latest tournament triumph.
Another player who will be carry championship winning ambitions is Gerwyn Price, who returns to action after opting to skip the Germany-staged World Cup.
The Iceman missed out on his maiden victory in the event two years ago after being beaten in a tense and dramatic final leg shootout by Rob Cross, but will hope to right that wrong this time around.
