In recent years, misfiring Premier League clubs have given England strong representation in Europe's secondary competition.
Across each of the last four seasons, England have had the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal representing them, with the Red Devils making two finals, while Spurs and Villa have lifted the trophy in the last two years. Go back a little further and there was the all-English final in 2019 between Chelsea and Arsenal, with the Blues emerging victorious via a 4-1 win.
This year, however, Premier League representation looks a little weaker, with Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace all competing.
In what is a hugely competitive market, Bournemouth are fourth favourites at 10/1, Palace are eighth-favourites at 14/1, while Sunderland are joint-11th favourites at 18/1, and despite the double-figure prices, punters are staying away from the Premier League trio.
bet365’s Steve Freeth said: "We’ve seen a Premier League-heavy Europa League over the last two seasons, with Tottenham and Manchester United contesting the 2025 showpiece and Aston Villa beating Nottingham Forest at the semi-final stage before lifting the trophy in Istanbul.
“However, we’re hardly being knocked over by punters in a rush to back Bournemouth, Crystal Palace or Sunderland. In fact, of the trio, just 3% of stakes placed have been on the Eagles, and they’ve been the best supported of the three.
“We’ve seen noticeable business in a few outsiders, with Benfica (18/1 in14/1) being responsible for 21% of stakes, and we’ve taken more money on 50/1 Olympiacos than the three Premier League teams put together.
"We’ve taken the most money on Juventus, with over a third of stakes placed being on the Serie A side, but at 7/1 the field, it feels like a wide-open Europa League betting heat this season."
