Manchester City crashed out of the inaugural edition of the newly-formed Club World Cup in a 4-3 defeat to Simone Inzaghi's Al Hilal.
While many have criticised the Club World Cup in recent weeks and months, the monetary value and financial benefit is glaringly obvious, and Man City’s prize money may not be as high as first anticipated after a shock round of 16 exit to Al Hilal.
Taking the lead just once in a 4-3 defeat, it was Marcos Leonardo’s second goal of the game in extra time that proved decisive, with Pep Guardiola’s side unable to respond.
Speaking after the game, Bernardo Silva criticised various components of his side’s game that he felt contributed to the defeat.
What lacked was from our side; a bit more concentration, a bit more organisation when we lost the ball to control, especially the transitions.
- Bernardo Silva (post-match interview)
"It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don't let them run, and they ran away too many times. With one, two passes, there was always a feeling of danger coming from them.
"When we allow teams to run like this we always suffer a lot, and today was the case.”
While the Club World Cup comes after a long season in which the Citizens were by no means at their best, their alleged lack of control may ring alarm bells for Man City fans given Guardiola’s ever-present emphasis on commanding games and making the opposition do the running.
The Catalan manager, however, didn’t seem too alarmed by his team’s performance, instead thanking his team and looking ahead to next season.
He said: "I cannot thank the players enough for training and playing how they have been.
"But it was a difficult game. The margins were minimal. We created a lot and [Yassine] Bounou made incredible saves but we were so open.
"We would have loved to have continued, it will only be once every four years, and we had a feeling that the team was doing well.
"But we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season."
