Ben White Latest Odds: Arsenal defender 8/1 to make England’s Euros squad

Arsenal defender Ben White has not featured for England since the 2022 World Cup but his price has shortened from 20/1 into 8/1 to make Gareth Southgate’s Euros squad.

White elected to distance himself from this month’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, with Southgate informed by Arsenal sporting director Edu that the 26-year-old did not wish to be considered for selection.

Despite his stance, White's Gunners teammate Declan Rice is hopeful that he convince the defender to reconsider his international career, with the former West Ham ace – who is set to lead the team out as captain against Belgium on his 50th cap – insisting he will have a conversation with him on his return to London Colney.

Rice’s comments have subsequently led to White being backed into 8/1 in our To be in Finals Squad market.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Speculative punters are hoping that Rice and his colleagues can help to persuade White to make a U-turn on his England stance.”

Euro 2024

White’s unavailability comes at a time when England’s defensive options have been depleted following a raft of injuries.

Originally a central defender, White has played 32 of his 35 Arsenal matches at right-back this term and his versatility would be a key asset for Southgate, especially in a tournament scenario.

Not only would his positional flexibility be a bonus, but the former Brighton academy graduate has proven himself to be an integral figure in Arsenal’s title charge and recently signed a new long-term deal to stay at the north London club until 2028.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Rice said: "Ben (White) is such a good guy and he is an unbelievable footballer.

"It is hard to know really what is going on but he has made his decision and he doesn't want to play for England at this moment in time.

"Hopefully, with the quality he has and can bring to this side, we can bring him back in."

White has not been selected for international duty since asking to leave the England camp in Qatar, with reports later emerging of an alleged bust-up with England assistant Steve Holland.

Southgate had wanted to pick him in his squad for the current international break but admitted “there was clearly reticence” from White’s side.

The door is understood to remain wide open for White with regard to his inclusion for Euro 2024 and if he is willing, his club form would make him difficult to ignore.

Competition in the right back department is intense but injuries to Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold had left Southgate’s options bare against Brazil.

The first half withdrawal of Kyle Walker only exacerbated England’s woes but Ezri Konsa deputised impressively and the Aston Villa defender could be a safe wildcard option for the Three Lions.

Utilised at right back and centre back by Unai Emery, Konsa is 13/8 to feature in England’s Euros squad.
