BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom hopes for weight 'discussions' ahead of Chris Eubank Jr v Conor Benn 2.
British rivals Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn delivered a fascinating spectacle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 26th April, but it was the pre-fight build up that set up the fierce contest.
Eubank Jr narrowly missed the 160lb limit at the weigh in and a widely discussed rehydration clause meant that he could scale no more than 170lbs on the morning of the fight. Nonetheless, the 35 year old was triumphant on the night via unanimous discussion.
Eubank Jr’s promoter and founder of promotional company BOXXER, Ben Shalom exclusively spoke to Sky Sports on the affect that the weight and rehydration clause had on Eubank and whether it would need to be assessed ahead of a rematch, mooted for the 27th September 2025.
"The rehydration clause is probably less dangerous than the 160lbs limit now at this stage in his career.
"That's where probably it's the biggest challenge. As the organisers of the event everyone has to be sensible as to how we approach the second fight. That probably was the one downer on the event, all the talk about the weight. And so I'm sure everyone will be sensible.”
"We saw a very good fight, a very competitive fight but there were concerns around the challenge on Chris' body. So no one wants to see that.
We believe and we hope there'll be discussions around that (the weight) before we make the rematch.
- Ben Shalom, BOXXER
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, home of Premier League outfit Spurs, hosted the first display in a fight card that didn’t disappoint, but Shalom admitted that he would be open to changing the arena should the opportunity come about.
"I think Wembley, the Principality [Stadium]. This is a rematch that could fill two or three stadiums so it doesn't really matter [where it is]. Wherever this is it's going to sell like anything.”
