Bayern Munich Bundesliga Odds: Bayern 4/1 for title after back-to-back losses

After a second straight league defeat, Bayern Munich are out to 4/1 to win the 2023/24 Bundesliga title.

The 2011/12 season was the last time Bayern Munich failed to win a trophy, when they came second in the Bundesliga and lost the DFB-Pokal final to Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund, inexplicably losing the Champions League final – in their home stadium, no less – to unfancied Chelsea.

Since then, Bayern have won 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles, collecting two more Champions Leagues and winning the DFB-Pokal five times.

The German giants’ era of dominance, however, looks to be coming to an abrupt end.

Having lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona in the summer of 2021, Bayern limped out of the Champions League, put to the sword by an Erling Haaland-inspired Manchester City. Bayern reinforced their front line with a world class striker in Harry Kane, but they look like falling short in the title race.

As brilliant as Kane is, one of his biggest strengths is his playmaking, but with the likes of Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, Joshua Kimmich and the rest of the supporting cast, another playmaker is not what Bayern need, but Kane does have a tendency to be more involved in build-up play than Lewandowski did, and it may be to Bayern’s detriment.

In terms of xGD, Bayern are clear of Bayer Leverkusen (+1.78/90 to Bayer’s +1.20/90) but fans do cast a sceptical eye at managers who start citing their xG figures when losing, as Thomas Tuchel did at the weekend.

Bayern may have had considerably better xG than VfL Bochum at the weekend, but 68% possession and a better xG counts for little when you’ve lost 3-2, especially when it comes on the back of a humbling 3-0 defeat to title favourites Bayer Leverkusen.

It’s been a succession of domestic disappointments for Bayern this season, losing 3-0 in the DFL-Supercup to RB Leipzig before being knocked out of the cup by third-tier Saarbrucken.

Bayern Munich Champions League odds

Of course, failure on the domestic front could be compensated with a second Champions League success in 11 years, but even that’s in the balance after a 1-0 defeat to Lazio.

Bayern are now 8/1 to win the Champions League, though they should still expect to go through, priced at 4/9 to qualify, and perhaps with a decent quarter-final draw, Tuchel’s men can find some momentum over the next few months.

Tuchel has, of course, guided two different teams to Champions League finals – PSG in 2020, being beaten by his current employers, and Chelsea the following year, having only taken over in the January.
