Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr was widely expected to win the 2024 Ballon d'Or after his role in Real Madrid's La Liga and UEFA Champions League double, but Rodri was named the winner in Monday night's ceremony.
Nevertheless, Vinicius Jr is favourite for 2025 with Real Madrid expected to go close domestically and in Europe once again as second favourites for La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
Team-mate Kylian Mbappe is second favourite but has yet to hit the heights expected in the Spanish capital following his long-awaited move from Paris Saint-Germain.
bet365's Sports and Trading expert Steve Freeth said: "The reign of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is well and truly over as we head into a new era of players that could dominate for the next 10 years.
"Although Vinicius Jr was runner-up in 2024, he has plenty of time on his side, along with the likes of Lamine Yamal, Mbappe and Erling Haaland, with the France star the oldest of the bunch at just 25 years of age."
Haaland finished second behind Messi after Manchester City's Treble win of 2023 and with Rodri out for the season and Kevin De Bruyne's injury issues showing no sign of relenting, the Norwegian is City's shortest-priced player at 5/1, no doubt set to play a significant part in any success at the Etihad this term.
Yamal took centre stage at Euro 2024 despite compatriot Rodri being named the Player of the Tournament, and the 17-year-old looks like a Ballon d'Or winner in waiting, currently fourth favourite ahead of Jude Bellingham.
