Bahrain Grand Prix Tips, Predictions & Odds

F1 returns this week with an unusual Saturday race, as the 2024 field go wheel-to-wheel for the first time at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The man they all have to catch is Red Bull’s world champion Max Verstappen, who won this race last season on his way to collecting his third title in a dominant campaign.

All eyes will be on the action as fans across the globe tune in to see if anyone can deny the Dutch star a fourth successive championship.

Setting the scene…

Max Verstappen is unsurprisingly the red-hot favourite at 1/3 to take what would be his eighth successive grand prix victory. In fact, with his only recent flop coming in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix won by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr., Verstappen has won a phenomenal 17 of the last 18 races.

The Dutchman, who claimed his third straight drivers' title by a record margin of 290 points, looked happy with his car in pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, which will also be used for the opening race.

Red Bull's rival teams seem to be in better shape than they were at this stage of last season, though, with Ferrari setting the fastest time of the test, Mercedes looking to be more competitive after a tough couple of years and McLaren bidding to build on their strong finish to the 2023 campaign.

Charles Leclerc top 2 finish @ 9/4

It may be asking too much for Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to cause an upset by winning the opening race of the season and the reward for backing him in the traditional podium-finish market at 1/1 is not huge.

However, there is a sweet spot provided by the top-2 finish market, where the Monegasque driver is listed at 9/4.

Leclerc won this race from pole two seasons ago, when he made a great start to the campaign with two wins and a second place in the first three races.

He again showed that he goes well at the track last year, being best of the rest behind the Red Bull pair in qualifying and running a comfortable third in the race when his engine failed.

Ferrari showed good pace in the pre-season test at this venue last week and perhaps more importantly gave the impression that they can maintain it for long runs.

Leclerc looks a good value bet at these prices to be able to at least split the Red Bulls and take a top-two finish.

Sergio Perez was almost 12 seconds behind Verstappen in Bahrain last year and if Ferrari have made the expected improvement Leclerc should have a good chance of finishing ahead of the Mexican driver.

Max Verstappen fastest lap @ 4/6

Those who aren't interested in the outright odds of Verstappen might consider backing him to set the fastest lap of the race, which is available at a much better price of 4/6.

Verstappen recorded the quickest lap at 'only' nine of the 22 races last season but is always keen to grab the extra point when the race situation allows it.

He will be as keen as anyone to discover just how good his new car is and even if he's under orders to take it easy late in the race, the determined Dutchman will be tempted to put his new car through its paces.

McLaren fastest pit stop @ 7/2

McLaren were the team on the move in the second half of the season and were almost on a par with Red Bull at times.

Their new car may also need a few more upgrades to arrive before they are challenging right at the front of the field but the team continue to excel in other areas and they look overpriced to perform the fastest pit-stop of the race at 7/2.

While Red Bull won the overall fastest pit-stop award and are understandably favourites for the swiftest stop in Bahrain at 11/10, McLaren performed the fastest ever stop at just 1.80 seconds on Lando Norris' car in Qatar last season.

The British team posted six of the fastest 10 stops last season, with Red Bull responsible for three and Ferrari one, and should be well-drilled again.
