AFL Betting Guide 🗒️

To Win

The most straightforward market in AFL betting, this is simply choosing who will win the match. The odds are influenced by a team's performance so far that season, where they are in the standings and whether a side is at home or away.

Match Result 3 Way

Essentially the same as the 'to win' market, but includes the draw as an option. Draws are incredibly rare in the AFL, so you can usually find some high odds for it in this market.

Handicap

Handicap betting levels the playing field when one team is considered a heavy favourite over another.

It does so by offering a handicap on the number of points in the winning margin.

For example, if a team has a -22.5 handicap, a bet on them will only win if they win a match by 23 points or more, while the +22.5 handicap bet will win if the side that lose finish the match within 23 points of the opposition.

Winning Margin

This market is self-explanatory, it is betting on the amount of points the team you back will win by.

Lines are set by the bookies, and in AFL they are often 1-39 and 40+ points.

If you select the 1-39 for example, your bet will be a winner if the team you have backed win by a margin anywhere in between 1 and 39 points.

AFL Team Guides 🏉

The Historical Big Four

  • Collingwood Magpies - Colloquially known as "The Pies", Collingwood are the joint most successful AFL team in history, with 16 Premiership titles and 45 Grand Final appearances. Although the Melbourne based side's 29 final losses is the highest tally in the league.
  • Essendon Bombers - Another Melbourne based team, another team with 16 Premiership titles. Essendon are a historically successful team that have struggled to make their mark in the division since the turn of the century, failing to secure a title since 2000.
  • Carlton Blues - Once again based in Melbourne, Carlton were a force to be reckoned with in years gone by, they also have 16 AFL Premiership titles like their rivals Collingwood and Essendon. However, most of these came during the VFL era, and they haven't tasted victory since 1995.
  • Richmond Tigers - The Tigers' resurgence in the late 2010's saw them win the Grand Final in 2017, 2019 and 2020 - ending a drought that had been ongoing since their previous title in 1980. They have 13 Premiership titles, making them the fourth most successful team in the league's history

The Modern Big Four

  • Collingwood Magpies - The only team to fall into both the historical and modern 'big four', The Pies are the most consistent AFL club, with their most recent title being their 2023 success.
  • Brisbane Lions - Five time champions Brisbane hadn't won a title until their 2001 victory, which they followed up in 2002 and 2003 to become the first team in history to win three consecutive Premierships. They also went back-to-back in 2024 and 2025 while being one of the most entertaining sides to watch in AFL history.
  • Geelong Cats - Geelong are a historically strong side, winning six titles up to 1963. However, the Cats then endured a 44 year drought until they tasted victory again in 2007, though they have gone on to win three more since - most recently in 2022.
  • Hawthorn Hawks - Hawthorn are the only AFL club to have won the Premiership in every decade since the 1960's, taking their total tally to 13. They also became the second team in history to threepeat the Premiership in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
