Australian Racing: Draw favours Sycorax

There’s just the three meetings to get involved with this Monday with racing on turf at Bathurst and Lismore and action on the artificial surface at Pakenham Synthetic.

Moody to claim victory at Pakenham

In the seventh race at Paktenham Synthetic, a 1600m Benchmark 58 event the market is dominated by Inrordinate and Sycorax.

Inordinate has shown a liking for this venue in two starts this spell finishing runner-up in a couple of 1400m events at this level including when ridden by his jockey here Zac Spain to be beaten less than a length a week ago.

Overcame a wide draw on that occasion and will have to do similar if he is to go one better in this contest.

The draw has been slightly kinder to Sycorax with the four-year-old filly having been drawn two inside her main rival in barrier ten.

Peter Moody’s charge has shown improved form in two starts this spell finishing runner-up on a soft 7 turf surface over 1300m at Bendigo prior to a half-length victory in a 1400m maiden here at the start of the month.

Shapes as if the extra 200m the daughter of So You Think gets here will suit and she is taken to deliver a victory in her first start against winners.

Snitzyka to take Bathurst opener

The switch to racing on a soft 5 surface combined with the drop in distance appeared to suit Ogrim with the gelding winning by a length-and-a-half in an 1100m maiden event at Forbes at the end of last month when making his first start of 2022.

Trained by Merv Rumble the five-year-old had delivered some solid efforts last year however his form tailed off with his 2021 ending with a heavy defeat when sixth in a 1400m maiden at Hawkesbury.

It remains to be seen whether he can back up that maiden effort against winners and with that in mind Bjorn Baker’s Snitzyka is selected to put a disappointing effort when seventh over 1600m at Mudgee at the start of April behind her racing first up.

The four-year-old is dropping in trip here but has shown good speed in the past and having placed twice in Class 1 races since delivering a half-length victory in a 1400m maiden at Goulburn at the start of March she is taken to resume with a victory.

Hardley for maiden triumph

In the sixth at Lismore Stoinka is expected to jump as favourite for a big field 1310m maiden set to take place on a good 4 track.

Ridden by Matthew McGuren here the son of Hooked took a step forward from her previous efforts when finishing a close up second in a maiden over 1200m at Coffs Harbour earlier this month.

Has yet to encounter a sound surface in his four career starts to date and while that Coffs Harbour form looks solid in the context of this race the three-year-old has to defy a wide draw here and may find one of his older rivals too good on this occasion.

Preference on this occasion is for the Owen Glue-trained Hardley Grey who has finished placed in his two most recent starts including when third over 1400m in a maiden event on a soft 6 track at Casino earlier this month.

Had previously delivered a second place finish on a heavy 10 surface in a similar race to this over course and distance and while any softening of the ground would be no issue for the Instinction gelding it’s notable that he has run well on the forecast good 4 surface in the past when runner-up in an 1100m maiden here in September last year.
