Atlético de Madrid 2-0 Manchester United Match Stats and Timeline: Red Devils' winless run extends

Atlético de Madrid recorded their first win of the UEFA Champions League campaign when overcoming Manchester United at the Estadio Metropolitano.

The Spanish outfit have made a fruitful start to the La Liga campaign -- placed second in the standings after winning six of their first eight games -- but they fell to a 2-1 defeat in their UEFA Champions League opener in September.

Having never beat an English side in a group stage/league phase contest before, a win was never a certainty when welcoming an out of form Manchester United, but the Estadio Metropolitano was bouncing and the hosts made a lightening start in the Spanish capital.

It took less than a minute for Atleti to take the lead, and while it was a sharp break from Diego Simeone's side, you have to ask questions of Man Utd's defending.

It was Pablo Barrios who appeared at the back post to convert an Alex Baena cross. Ayden Heaven made an attempt to prevent a devastating opener, but he could only help the ball over the line.

After a nightmare start, Michael Carrick's side improved and should have levelled the game through Bryan Mbeumo on two occasions.

A controversial red card for for Leny Yoro made matters worse for the visitors, and substitute Ademola Lookman was on hand to punish Man Utd just five minutes later.

The Atleti forward simply couldn't miss, firing the ball into an empty net after Jonathan David's shot was saved.

It's a first UEFA Champions League win of the league phase for Simeone's well-drilled machine, while Man Utd extend their winless run to five games in all competitions.
