Ollie Watkins became Aston Villa's all-time Premier League goalscorer after netting the only goal in a 1-0 victory away at Bournemouth on Saturday evening.
The England striker produced a deft finish to convert Morgan Rogers' inviting cross in the first-half to boost Unai Emery's side UEFA Champions League ambitions.
In the process, Watkins netted his 75th Premier League goal for the Villans and overtook Gabby Agbonlahor at the top of the club's Premier League goalscoring charts.
Watkins joined Aston Villa from Brentford for a club record fee of £28 million in September 2020 and has been a major part of the club's success in recent years.
The 29-year-old striker has also been linked with a move away this summer after spending some time on the sidelines following the arrival of Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United in January.
After Emery left Watkins out of the starting line-up for the second leg of Aston Villa's UEFA Champions League quarter-final with Paris Saint-Germain, Watkins expressed his disappointment publicly and many observers felt that Watkins could be coming to the end of his time at Villa Park.
"I was fuming I wasn't playing," Watkins told Sky Sports when asked about being left out against PSG.
"I let the manager know that. He's the manager at the end of the day. I respect his decision. But I'm not one of the players happy to sit on the bench.
"It's something I haven't experienced before and then to miss out on the biggest stage, you always want to play."
Despite his frustrations, Watkins remains the team's focal point and he was serenaded by Aston Villa's supporters after the full-time whistle on the South Coast.
Emery paid tribute to the record-breaking goalscoring in his post-match press conference.
“He deserves it completely because he is a hard worker," said Emery.
“His courage has been fantastic and to achieve it is very fantastic. I am so, so grateful to have a player like him.”
