According to reports, Aston Villa have made a €15m offer for UD Almería midfielder Dion Lopy.
Lopy, 24, is reportedly high on Aston Villa's list of targets, as they look to increase their squad depth ahead of a season back in the UEFA Champions League.
The UEFA Europa League champions have long been searching for a viable back up for French defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara, who - despite his exceptional quality - has failed to complete more then 25 Premier League matches in a season since joining the Villans.
As a result, Unai Emery's side are usually left short in midfield during the Frenchman's injury periods, with their points per game dramatically worse without the former Marseille man in the team.
Douglas Luiz was brought back to the club on loan last season to fill the void left by Kamara's latest injury, though - due to the Brazilian's poor form - Swedish defender Viktor Lindelof ended up being the deputy defensive midfielder for the back end of the season.
Whilst the Swede performed extremely well in that role, there's an acceptance that he isn't the long term answer to cover for Kamara, leading to links to a number of defensive midfielders.
Now, according to reports in Spain, Emery's side have made their move for a back up midfielder, placing a €15m offer for UD Almeria's Dion Lopy.
The Senegalese midfielder, who has earned five caps for his country to date, has made 105 appearances for the Spanish side since joining from Stade Reims in 2023 for a reported €6.5m.
Primarily a defensive minded midfielder, Lopy performed exceptionally for Almeria in La Liga 2 last season, as his side narrowly missed out on promotion to the top tier.
As a result of their failure to return to La Liga, Almeria risk losing their star assets for a relatively cut-price fee, with Lopy one of a number of their key players set for an exit.
With the financial constraints currently imposed on them, Villa are reportedly in the market for squad depth so far this summer, with the links to Lopy mirroring their well documented pursuit of former Tottenham Hotspur right back Emerson Royal.
