Arsenal v Porto: Predictions, Tips and Odds

Arsenal’s Champions League round of 16 tie with Porto is finely poised with the Portuguese side holding a 1-0 advantage and the Racing Post’s Dan Childs has picked out his three best bets for the second leg at the Emirates Stadium in North London.

The teams were involved in a tight contest at Estadio do Dragao last month but Porto had the last laugh with Galeno’s superb injury-time goal securing them a precious victory.

Arsenal were below their best in Oporto but they are on an eight-match winning sequence in the Premier League and will fancy their chances of turning the tie around.

The Gunners are 1/3 to bounce back and advance to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.

Porto are 9/4 to progress and 12/1 to do so in style with a victory in the capital.

Dan Childs’ Arsenal v Porto tips and predictions

Arsenal and both teams to score - 21/10

Arsenal failed to register a single shot on target in their 1-0 loss to Porto at Estadio do Dragao, but they are likely to be much more purposeful on home soil and can emerge victorious from a high-scoring encounter.

Mikel Arteta’s side will look to set a high tempo from the outset and are likely to accept greater risk by deploying a higher defensive line.

There will be counter-attacking opportunities for Porto and it is quite possible that they could end Arsenal’s sequence of three consecutive home Champions League clean sheets.

However, the away side’s problem will be keeping the back door shut.

Arsenal scored 12 home goals in the Champions League group stage and they have netted 33 goals across their last eight Premier League fixtures.

They have had a poor record in Champions League round of 16 ties - losing each of their last seven - but their last success at this juncture was a 6-2 aggregate victory over Porto in March 2010 which was sealed by a 5-0 second leg victory in North London.

Arsenal might have to go through more of a roller-coaster ride on Tuesday night but their attacking qualities should see them through to the next stage.

Kai Havertz to score anytime - 7/5

Kai Havertz took a while to adjust to life as an Arsenal player but he has looked far more at ease in recent weeks and could be the man to deliver on a tense night in the capital.

The German arrived at the Emirates with high expectations last summer after the Gunners had paid Chelsea a reported £65million for his services.

Havertz got off to a slow start and was not always assured of a place in the starting line-up.

But he has got into a groove in recent weeks and is full of confidence after scoring in each of his last four Premier League appearances.

Havertz popped up with the winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 success at home to Brentford and his ability to arrive late in the penalty box marks him down as a major threat for Porto, who have struggled to keep clean sheets on their travels.

Porto are sure to sit deep and attempt to batten down the hatches but Havertz has a knack of finding space where none seems to exist and he looks an overpriced 7/5 wager to get on the scoresheet.

Bukayo Saka to assist a goal - 2/1

Bukayo Saka is joint-top of the Champions League assist charts with four from six appearances and he looks an overpriced 2/1 shot to lay on at least one goal in the second leg against Porto.

The 22-year-old was subdued in the first leg but he has excelled for large parts of Arsenal’s Premier League title push.

Saka’s 21 Premier League goal involvements (13 goals and eight assists) establish him as Arsenal’s most influential attacking player and there should be plenty more to match winning moments to come between now and the end of the season.

He was a constant menace for the Gunners in Saturday’s 2-1 triumph at home to Brentford and is likely to have a major say in ensuring the continuation of their Champions League journey.
