The Gunners were lacklustre in the first-leg of their Round of 16 clash at the Estadio do Dragao three weeks ago, as Galeno's injury-time winner helped the Portuguese giants establish an advantage ahead of their trip to North London.

However, Mikel Arteta's men had won their last eight Premier League matches heading into the game and they arrived at the Emirates with their hopes of silverware very much alive on two fronts.

2003-04 winners Porto were resolute for much of the first-half of the all-important second-leg, as a patient Arsenal looked for ways to carve open a defence that was well-marshalled by the experience of Pepe.

The home side were able to level the tie four minutes before the interval, however, as Martin Odegaard picked out Leandro Trossard on the left side on the penalty area, before the Belgian winger calmly slotted the ball past Porto 'keeper Diogo Costa.

Odegaard thought he had put his side 2-0 up on the night and ahead on aggregate with just over 20 minutes to go in normal time, but the goal was ruled out for a foul by Kai Havertz on Pepe in the build-up.

Neither side could find the decisive goal within 90 minutes as the game went into extra-time, where both sides had chances to prevent the game going to penalties.

Odegaard, Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice converted their spot-kicks and after David Raya saved efforts from first Wendell, and then Galeno, the Gunners had cemented their place in the next round.

Arsenal's progression through to the last eight is the first time they have achieved the feat since the 2009/10 season, which preceded seven successive eliminations at the Last 16 stage.

As a result, their name is in the hat for the quarter-final draw alongside the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and last season's winners Manchester City.
