Bournemouth and Southampton have unhappy memories of facing their weekend opponents Liverpool and Manchester United, and we’re now 50/1 that any side hits double figures this season.
It’s a case of ‘beware the wounded animal’ as the Saints (8/1) get set to make the long trip north to Old Trafford this weekend to tackle a United (4/11) side still reeling from their Anfield nightmare.
The Red Devils were thumped 7-0 by Liverpool on Merseyside last weekend and were forced to face the wrath of a disgruntled Eric ten Hag, who pulled absolutely no punches in his assessment of his side’s shambolic second half showing.
You’d fear for any side toeing up with United this weekend, let alone one languishing towards the foot of the table and now odds-on to be plying their trade in the second tier next term.
It’s also worth reminding you of the fact that the Saints have been beaten 9-0 in this fixture previously – in January last year – and given United’s embarrassment, they will be determined on take their frustrations out on the Premier League strugglers.
United aren’t the only side to notch nine in the top-flight neither, with Jurgen Klopp’s men (4/9) also dominating 6/1 shots Bournemouth – coincidentally their opponents this weekend – by the same scoreline earlier this season.
Given Liverpool’s new-found confidence, and United’s desperation to bounce straight back from their hammer blow, there is every chance that we see a goal frenzy in each of these two encounters this weekend.
bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “We’ve had a few sides banging in nine but never any reaching double figures during the Premier League era – not that the South Coast duo will need reminding about that.
“The Cherries were on the receiving end of a 9-0 thrashing at Anfield just a few months ago, and they’ve conceded seven in their last two games. They’ll be hurting after their late Emirates heartbreak too.
“Whilst Southampton haven’t been as leaky as their near neighbours this season, they did suffer the embarrassment of two 9-0 hammerings in the space of 15 months, and the Red Devils will be looking to inflict their own form of punishment after their own drubbing last Sunday.”
We’re also offering odds of 5/1 for Liverpool to be the highest scoring team across this weekend’s top-flight schedule, with United 11/2 to net more than any other side against Ruben Selles’ strugglers.
