Antonio Rudiger's participation in the UEFA Nations League finals and FIFA Club World Cup is in doubt after the Germany and Real Madrid defender underwent surgery on his left knee.
Rudiger was forced to withdraw from Real's Copa del Rey final clash with Barcelona in extra time after sustaining a partial meniscus tear.
The central defender underwent successful surgery and will now commence his rehabilitation which will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the La Liga season, which concludes on May 25.
However, Rudiger was set to feature for Germany in their Nations League semi-final against Portugal 10 days later and his availability for that contest now appears slim.
If Julian Nagelsmann's team advance, they will face one of Spain or France in the final on June 8 in Munich.
Rudiger also faces a race to be fit in time for Real Madrid's involvement in the reformed FIFA Club World Cup, which commences on June 14.
Taking to social media in the aftermath of his surgery, Rudiger outlined how he'd been plying through the pain barrier for several months.
"Now I'm finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success. Thanks to the medical team," the 32-year-old said.
"[There are] two big tournaments with the Nations League and the Club World Cup in front of me, but I have to look from week to week.
I will do everything I can to make it happen.
Irrespective of his recovery, Rudiger may face a substantial period on the sidelines as a repercussion for his actions in the Copa del Rey final.
The former Chelsea defender threw an object at the referee in the dying seconds of the contest and could face a suspension of between four and 12 matches.
Criticised by Germany's sporting director Rudi Voller for his actions, Rudiger has since issued an apology.
"There's definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I'm very sorry for that," Rudiger said.
"Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night."
If Rudiger does receive the maximum punishment for his violation, it will leave his new manager with a slight headache at centre-back.
Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly set to take over as manager of Brazil and there's immense speculation as to who will succeed the Italian at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Former Galactico and current Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso is the favourite to be installed as the new Real Madrid manager.
