Anthony Joshua reportedly considering investing in Watford FC

With Anthony Joshua’s boxing career expected to draw to a close in the not too distant future, he is reportedly set to divert some attention to making investments elsewhere.

Undoubtedly a British boxing great, Joshua fell to his fourth career defeat against Daniel Dubois in September 2024, begging the question as to whether his time is up at the top of the heavyweight division.

With that said, an all-British clash with Tyson Fury has been mooted, and Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that AJ could have ‘one to three fights left’.

A native of Watford, Joshua is rightly idolised in the area, and reports suggest that he is considering investing in local football club Watford.

When speaking to Seconds Out, Joshua spoke on his investment plans, including links with Watford.

He said: "We wanted to move into private equity, venture capital funds.

“As you earn, naturally you want to save, so rather than me spending recklessly I’m trying to invest money into certain asset classes and that was an opportunity that presented itself.

Nothing’s come of it yet. It’s a serious investment. If it comes off it’s one that should do well.

“If they went back to the Premier League then I’d need to get a shop on Market Street because the traffic that would be coming through Watford would be phenomenal.”

Ever-present in the British boxing scene since his breakthrough in 2013, Joshua declared his admiration for the club despite confessing that he’s not a “massive football fan.”

He said: ““I remember being on Market Street and watching the football fans.

“I’m not a massive football fan myself but watching the fans steamroll Market Street and steamroll Vicarage Road were real good scenes.

“If we don’t do it then good luck to them anyway because they’re a great team,” Joshua added.

Watford recorded a 14th place finish in the 2024/25 Championship campaign, recently sacking manager and former England international Tom Cleverley.

The chances of a return to the Premier League seems unlikely at this stage, but the nature of the Championship means nothing can be ruled out.
