The record-breaking Puerto Rican will be bidding for further history in the early hours of Sunday morning as she takes on the talented Mexican Erika Cruz hoping to become her country’s first undisputed world champion.

Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theatre plays host to a huge night of boxing as the two 126-pound world champions top the bill of a stacked fight card that also includes the undisputed super-featherweight showdown between Alycia Baumgardner, the recent conqueror or Mikaela Mayer, and Elhem Mekhaled.

Seven-weight world champion Serrano finally gets her shot at fully unifying a division she has ruled in since 2019, and whilst she has successfully ventured up and down the scales over the years there is no doubt that it’s at featherweight that the 34-year-old is most comfortable and effective.

She bounced back from her narrow, and somewhat controversial 135-pounds defeat to Katie Taylor last April with an eye-catching victory over Sarah Mahfoud back at 126-pounds to add the IBF strap to her array of titles in September, and will become undisputed champion if she can back up her 1/8 odds with a success over WBA strap holder Cruz in New York.

‘Real Deal’ Serrano boasts an impressive 30 knockouts from her 43 career victories; a percentage rate of just shy of 70 percent, which underlines her credentials as being one of the most prolific and powerful pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

Whilst the anguish of her loss to Taylor will certainly still lay in the mind of the Puerto Rican, there is no doubt that she will be looking to continue on the winning trail and set-up a money-spinning rematch with the Irish superstar; potentially for later in the year.

But before then she can ill afford to take her forthcoming Mexican opponent – who can be backed at 9/2 to cause the upset – for granted.

The bout in New York City this weekend will represent just the third time that Cruz will have ventured away from her home country, and she will be hoping and praying that it provides her with what would be by far and away the biggest win of her career to date.

Like Serrano, the Mexican is an aggressive, pressure fighter – although she doesn’t carry anywhere near the same punching prowess as her South American opponent, as proven by the fact she has stopped just three of her 16 opponents thus far.

That said, she is as tough as they come and won’t be afraid of mixing it with Serrano; although she will likely look to keep things on the inside to help stem the power of the 34-year-old, especially during the initial exchanges.

You’d sense that Serrano will open her up and land a barrage of punches at some point however, and if and when she does, then it will test Cruz’s chin in a way that it won’t ever have been tested before.

Only then will we find out whether she has the courage, grit and determination to last the distance (4/11 to go to points).
