The UEFA Super Cup is an annual fixture contested between the winners of the previous season's Champions League and Europa League.
It was previously played between the holders of the Champions League/European Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup, before the UEFA Cup - now Europa League - took the place of the Cup Winners' Cup when that competition was abolished in 1999.
The first match was played in 1973 and the 2023 edition saw Manchester City lift the trophy for the first time, as they beat Sevilla 5-4 on penalties after the match in Athens finished 1-1.
The UEFA Super Cup is traditionally held in August as a curtain raiser to the new European season.
The 2024 edition is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 14th August.
Since 2000 the UEFA Super Cup has been contested between the previous season's Champions League and Europa League/UEFA Cup winners.
In 2024, Champions League holders Real Madrid will be looking to triumph in the competition for a record sixth time, while they will be appearing in their ninth UEFA Super Cup, matching the tally of fierce rivals Barcelona.
Last season's Europa League winners Atalanta will be Real's opponents and they will be appearing in their first UEFA Super Cup after landing their maiden European title during 2023/24.
The UEFA Super Cup was initially played as a two-legged contest, with each side hosting a leg. It changed to the one-off game it is today for the first time when Chelsea beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Monaco's Stade Louis II in 1998.
Monaco hosted the match on an annual basis from 1998 until 2013 and since then the game has been held at neutral venues across Europe.
This year's final is due to be staged at the Kazimierz Gorski National Stadium in the Polish capital Warsaw.
UK viewers can watch the 2024 UEFA Super Cup live on TNT Sports.
The UEFA Super Cup will be held for the 49th time in 2024 when Real Madrid face off against Atalanta.
Ajax were the competition's first official winners, beating AC Milan 6-1 on aggregate over two legs. The record books show that the Dutch giants lifted the trophy in 1973 but both legs actually took place in 1974 - this marks the only time the competition has been held midway through a season.
The match has been held every year since then bar 1974 (excluding Ajax’s success that January), 1981 and 1985, while it remained a two-legged competition until 1998.
Despite losing the first UEFA Super Cup, AC Milan have won it a joint-record five times, while they have also been runners-up twice.
Barcelona share that benchmark number of successes, as do Real Madrid, who will become the first team to lift six titles if they beat Atalanta in the 2024 final.
Liverpool are the most successful British team in the competition's history, as they have lifted the trophy on four occasions, most recently in 2019, while Atletico Madrid are three-time winners.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Anderlecht, Valencia and Juventus are the only other sides to have triumphed on more than once occasion, all doing so twice.
Other British winners include Manchester United (1991), Nottingham Forest (1979), Aston Villa (1982), Aberdeen (1983) and Manchester City, who are the defending champions after claiming their maiden success in 2023.
