Ali Carter v Mark Allen: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Having lost 10-4 to Shaun Murphy in the final of the Players Championship last season, Ali Carter will be hoping to get another shot at securing the silverware.

The Captain, having one of the seasons of his life, has overcome Tom Ford and Judd Trump to reach the semi-final at the Telford International Centre, but another tough test awaits for him against the fired-up Mark Allen.

Allen looked in flying form when defeating Mark Williams 6-3 in his opening assignment before showing his steely side with a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Gary Wilson in the quarter-final.

This is a repeat of the Masters semi-final from January in which Carter triumphed 6-3 so Allen, having now lost three of their last four meetings, will be after some revenge.

Ali Carter v Mark Allen betting tips and predictions

Mark Allen -1.5 frames on handicap - 1/1

This makes for a compelling semi-final as, Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan aside, these have been two of the season’s most consistent performers.

Bookmakers favour the chances of ten-time ranking event winner Allen, who would arguably hold stronger claims in the title decider as he has won his last five final appearances.

Carter, meanwhile, has won only one of his last six ranking event finals and this season has finished runner-up to Trump at the Wuhan Open and O’Sullivan in the Masters.

The Captain was also beaten by Murphy in last season’s Players Championship final, suggesting that Allen has greater belief and more composure in the pressured moments.

Losing 6-3 to Carter in last month’s Masters semi-final clearly hurt Allen as he has been on the upgrade ever since, losing only three of his subsequent 14 matches.

Two of those defeats came against John Higgins in the last 16 of the German Masters and the quarter-final of the Welsh Open, but it indicated that his time may be fast approaching.

Allen delivered what was arguably the performance of the tournament so far in his opening win over Williams, stunning the Welshman with consecutive breaks of 146, 112 and 102 to race into a 3-0 lead.

Williams attempted the fightback but, having valiantly clawed it back to 4-2, Allen completed the task with knocks of 70 and 68.

That showed Allen to be in fine fettle and, although he was unable to add to his century tally against Wilson, he did still make four breaks of 63 or more.

The Northern Irishman had to keep things much tighter against Wilson as a few of the frames turned tactical, but it highlighted that his safety game is in line with his scoring one.

Carter is featuring in his fourth semi-final of the campaign so is evidently not doing much wrong.

The Captain kickstarted his campaign with a convincing 6-2 win over Ford before upsetting one of the tournament favourites in a 6-4 success over Trump.

However, lady luck was on Carter’s side in that one as he enjoyed some big flukes in the crunch moments and he won despite having only one break over 50.

Carter will need to raise his scoring game to compete with Allen in current form and it is hard to envisage as the Northern Irishman looks composed and focused.

So Allen warrants favouritism at 8/13, while his title odds of 12/5 are also tempting given his recent dominance in finals.

But those looking to get involved on the night may favour odds of 1/1 about Allen winning by at least two frames given none of the last ten meetings between the pair have gone to a decider.

Over 1.5 centuries - 4/6

When these two met at the Masters last month it was a high-quality contest featuring four centuries and odds of 4/6 about at least two this evening must appeal.

Allen and Carter also clashed at the Champion of Champions in November, a match that the Northern Irishman won 6-2, and there were breaks of 143, 135 and 100 in that one.

So it seems this duo brings the best out of one another and, with the pair in excellent form, an open, high-scoring semi-final could be on the horizon.
