A closer look at Manchester United target Adrien Rabiot

Manchester United’s struggles to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona over the course of the summer transfer window have been well documented, reportedly turning their sights towards Adrien Rabiot.

We take a look at the French international ahead of a potential move to Old Trafford.

What type of player is Rabiot?

Rabiot is a ball-playing midfielder, technically gifted, and should offer more in possession than Fred or Scott McTominay, though his passing numbers over the last 12 months for Juventus in terms of both volume and accuracy have left a lot to be desired.

He’s a tenacious player who can break play up, and would come in useful for a high-pressing side, with his size and strength making him valuable out of possession, however there have been accusations of Rabiot being inconsistent and having a poor attitude.

How much would Rabiot cost?

Reports suggest Rabiot would be signed for an initial £15m with another £5m in add-ons.

How tall is Rabiot?

Rabiot is 188cm, or 6ft2, underpinning his physical nature, making him a strong aerial presence, be it in the middle of the park or from set pieces.

Who does Rabiot play for?

After coming through the PSG academy and going on to win five Ligue 1 titles, Rabiot moved to Juventus in 2019, where he’s made 129 appearances over three seasons, winning Serie A in 2020.

Where is Rabiot from?

Born in Paris, Rabiot is French and has represented the national side 29 times, although refused to be a part of the standby list of players after missing out on France’s 23-man World Cup squad which went on to win the tournament in 2018.

What position does Rabiot play?

A versatile midfielder, Rabiot most typically operates as a number 6, or on the left of a midfield three, occupying similar postions as Paul Pogba did during his time at United. He can also play as a more advanced central midfielder, or as a back-up wing-back, should Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia be unavailable.

Should he sign for United, expect him to take the place of either Fred or Scott McTominay (more likely the latter), behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen.

How old is Rabiot?

Rabiot is 27, turning 28 in April 2023.
