Point Of Law won the 2026 Melbourne Cup as trainer Ciaron Maher created history by training the first three home in "the race that stops a nation".

Maher ran seven in the Flemington showpiece, but it was his most fancied runner that came with a late, rattling run to score by three-and-three-quarter-lengths.

Following him home was Zahrann and Juja Kibo, also saddled by Maher.

Of the UK & Irish challenge, Joseph O'Brien's Sons And Lovers was the first in, finishing in fourth. The well-fancied Hopewell Rock could only manage ninth under Zac Lloyd.

Royal Supremacy completely broke the race apart in the early stages, at one point taking a 20-length lead on the rest of the field, but he was unable to sustain those fractions, eventually fading into fifth.

The winner, Point Of Law, was most impressive. Bred by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, he only left Royal ownership earlier this summer, purchased specifically for a crack at Melbourne Cup riches.

He landed the Geelong Cup on his first start down under and has now netted an extra £2.2m for connections for victory at Flemington.

Maher told reporters post-race that the win had been a "whirlwind", saying: "I knew I had my best hand going into it, but it's got to execute. I certainly didn't know Royal Supremacy was going to lead by that far but there's nothing better than a true staying test.

"Point Of Law has just thrived and I can't thank all the team and the owners enough. What a ride they've been on. It's been a whirlwind really, but I'm very proud of all the team. To get three horses in the first three spots, I'm very proud."

Trustyourinstinct and Goodie Two Shoes, who both carried the famous green and gold silks of JP McManus could only manage 11th and 22nd respectively.
