Luke Humphries has been installed as the favourite to land an eighth career European Tour title as the European Darts Trophy gets set to take centre stage in Germany this weekend.
The world number one captured two titles on the tour last year, at the German Darts Grand Prix and the Czech Darts Open, and will look to take advantage of Luke Littler's decision to withdraw himself from the upcoming event.
'The Nuke' reigned supreme at the Belgian Darts Open earlier this month, adding to his rapidly growing title haul, but has opted against joining the 48-player field bidding for glory inside Gottingen's fabled venue, the Lokhalle.
The return of the event comes after a seven year hiatus, with Michael van Gerwen capturing the title with an 8-3 victory over James Wade the last time it was staged back in 2018.
The Dutch star is second in the betting to be crowned champion this weekend, with the rejuvenated Gerwyn Price, who has already secured two nightly Premier League successes this term, also expected to enjoy a deep run.
2024 World Youth Champion Gian van Veen is also high in the betting having reached successive Players Championship finals on the PDC Pro Tour recently, overcoming Luke Humphries with a near 100 average in the latter.
Two-time champion of the world Gary Anderson and German number one Martin Schindler have also tasted success in floor tournaments in recent weeks, and both will be keen to defy their prices and capture the title and the bumper £30,000 top prize.
