The Blues endured an agonising end to the 2023/24 campaign, as, despite a last day 1-0 victory over Norwich City, the Midlanders were consigned to the third-tier for the first time since 1995.

In a cruel twist of fate, Birmingham's success was matched by each of Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers - each of whom Gary Rowett's side would have elevated themselves above had results gone the other way.

But, the past is in the past and the St. Andrews' club will now be looking forward with hope and optimism as they seek to turnaround their fortunes under their ambitious American owners.

bet365's Steve Freeth said: "Birmingham won’t want to be hanging around in the third tier for too long, but as history has proven, winning promotion from the third-tier hasn't been as easy as many big clubs had hoped.

"It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Blues recruitment team busy over the summer as they attempt to lay the foundations for what the club will be hoping is a promotion winning 2024/25 campaign."

At 1/1 the expectation is for the club to make an immediate return to the second-tier, although the likes of Bolton Wanderers - beaten by Oxford United in Saturday's play-off final, Wrexham and Huddersfield Town will be hoping to flex their own promotion muscle.

The Trotters are second in the betting at 3/1, but will need to galvanise themselves during the summer months as they gear up for another crack at the top six next season, after being beaten by Oxford in the League One Wembley showpiece.

Wrexham, on the back of successive automatic promotion winning campaigns, have been priced up at 10/3 to maintain their remarkable upward trajectory, whilst Huddersfield, who, like Birmingham, slipped out of the Championship last term, will be hoping their 7/2 hopes are justified.

Peterborough United once again fell short in the play-offs and can be backed at 4/1 to make a return to the second-tier by any means, with a plethora of other clubs, including Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham United, all available at 9/2 and 5/1.
