Welcome to week two of Wednesday Night Hockey!
There are only two games on the NHL schedule tonight. The Washington Capitals head to Ottawa to take on the Senators. And the Detroit Red Wings will host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena.
Let’s take a closer look at these games and make some picks.
|What||Washington Capitals @ Ottawa Senators|
|Where||Canadian Tire Centre, Kanata, Ontario|
|When||7 PM ET, Wednesday, October 18|
|How to watch||Sportnset|
|Money Line||WAS Capitals +150, OTT Senators -170|
The Washington Capitals are going to be in tough when they take on a red-hot Ottawa Senators team that is coming off back to back 5-2 wins against the Flyers and Lightning.
Ottawa is playing great hockey led by captain Brady Tkachuk who looks to have taken another step forward as an offensive player. Tkachuk has scored four goals in the first three games of the season. He is taking over games with his physicality and skill and is quickly becoming one of the great power forwards in the NHL.
Ottawa is also playing with a lot of speed and pace to their game, which might cause problems for a slower, veteran heavy team in Washington.
The Capitals are 1-1-0 to start the year. But their older forwards that they rely on to score goals haven't shown up yet. Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson, and Evgeny Kuznetsov were non-existent in both games against the Penguins and Flames to start their season.
This is a tough matchup for the Capitals. I think they will have a difficult time handling Ottawa's speed and skill. I'm picking the Senators on the puck line. I will also take Claude Giroux as an anytime goal scorer. He has yet to score this season but has had a lot of good chances. I think he breaks through with a goal tonight.
Puck Line: Ottawa (-1.5) +145
Anytime Goal Scorer: Claude Giroux +230
|What||Pittsburgh Penguins @ Detroit Red Wings|
|Where||Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, Michigan|
|When||7:30 PM ET, Wednesday, October 18|
|How to watch||Sportsnet|
|Money Line||PIT Penguins -120, DET Red Wings +100|
We are in for a great game between the Red Wings and Penguins. Both teams have high expectations this season after failing to make the playoffs in the 2022-23 campaign.
The Red Wings coming off back-to-back wins over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets where they outscored their opponents 10-4. Alex DeBrincat has looked dynamic playing on a line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. That line has combined for 10 points in three games. That dominate line will be a handful for an older Pittsburgh blueline.
Like Detroit, Pittsburgh is coming off back-to-back wins. A 4-0 beat down of the Washington Capitals and a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. The Penguins best players have looked fantastic in their last two victories led by Evgeni Malkin who has two goals and four assists in those wins.
There is not much separating these teams at the moment. Both are coming into the game with their best players playing like their best players. I think it is going to be a close contest. I'll take the hometown Red Wings to win and for the game to go to overtime.
