Wednesday Night Hockey Preview: Picks and predictions for Penguins-Canadiens, Bruins-Devils, and Sabres-Avalanche

This week's Wednesday Night Hockey features three national TV games that will highlight some of the league's best players.

Sidney Crosby is in Montreal to play the Canadiens. Boston is in New Jersey to take on the Devils. And the night cap has the Sabres looking to avoid an Avalanche in Colorado.

Let's look at each game and make some picks!

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Montreal Canadiens predictions

It’s always a big deal when Sidney Crosby plays on Bell Centre ice in Montreal, the mecca of hockey. Pittsburgh rolls into town having lost seven of their last nine games. They have the 28th ranked power play and Jake Guentzel is the only Penguin producing points at five on five.

Could the Crosby era of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey be coming to an end? If they don’t turn it around soon, it’s looking like it might be.

The rebuilding Canadiens are in a win one, lose one stretch of games. They are a mediocre team playing mediocre hockey. In their last nine game games, the Canadiens have a record of 4-4-1. Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki each have five points to lead the Canadiens in scoring during this stretch of games.

Pittsburgh is playing the second of a back-to-back tonight in Montreal. Montreal has also won four of their last five meeting against the Penguins. I could see this game being decided by special teams. I’ll take the home team with the better power play.

Boston Bruins @ New Jersey Devils predictions

We are in store for a great hockey game between the Devils and Bruins.

New Jersey is 6-2-0 in their last eight games and have scored 32 goals. They seemed to have found their scoring touch recently. Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier all are over a point per game during that span. They have the number one ranked power play in the NHL at 32.6%.

The one thing holding the Devils back is their goaltending. They have the second worst team save percentage in the NHL. Both Akira Schmid and Vitek Vanecek have had terrible starts to the season.

The Bruins are the exact opposite. They have the best goaltending in the NHL. The Bruins are first in team save percentage. Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark have split starts this season in the Bruins crease and both have excellent numbers. Swayman in particular has some of the best numbers in the NHL.

This is a classic battle of offence vs defence. I’ll take the team with the better goaltending and team that plays with much better defensive structure.

Buffalo Sabres @ Colorado Avalanche predictions

This season has not gone as planned for the Buffalo Sabres that was looking to take the next step in their evolution as a team. Buffalo is 7th in the Atlantic Division and 22nd in the NHL. They have a -12-goal differential and don’t have anyone who is close to being a point per game player.

The Sabres are 2-4-1 in their last seven games. This team has a lot of talent on paper but haven’t been able to put that talent to use on the ice.

They are heading into Denver to play against an Avalanche who have the best high-end players of any team in the NHL. I don’t see how a team that struggles defensively like Buffalo is going to contain the likes of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar. Those three combined for eight points against the Calgary Flames on Monday and were the best, most dominate players on the ice.

Ball Arena is a tough place to play. Especially when the Avalanche score a couple goals. The building gets loud, and the Avalanche feed off of it. I think this has the potential to be a blow out.
