Canada and Venezuela meet in the quarterfinals of the Copa America on Friday night in what promises to be an enthralling affair.
The Canucks recovered from a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Argentina in their opener to finish in second spot in Group A with four points, while Venezuela were surprise winners in Group B as they finished ahead of Ecuador to take top spot as Mexico were eliminated.
Venezuela veteran Salomon Rondon is the market leader in the anytime goalscorer market and for good reason.
Rondon has been directly involved in three of the South American’s six goals so far with an assist in the opening game against Ecuador and then efforts of his own in the wins over Mexico and Jamaica.
The 34-year-old came into the Copa America after a strong season at club level with 10 goals in 21 league games for Mexican outfit Pachuca, making last term his most productive in terms of goals-per-game since the 2014/15 season with Zenit St Petersburg.
Rondon is the focal point of the La Vinotinto attack and is averaging an impressive 4.3 shots per-game in the USA, so he should be expected to have a few attempts against Canada and it would be no surprise to see him convert at least one.
The former Everton and Newcastle man is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 41 goals to his name and he may well be able to add to that as Venezuela bid to reach the last four of the Copa America for just the second time in their history.
Yangel Herrera is yet to be booked at the Copa America but he was no stranger to the referee’s notebook at club level this season.
The Venezuela midfielder picked up nine bookings in 29 La Liga games for Girona this term and averaged a hefty 2.2 fouls per-game.
He perhaps hasn’t been quite as combative on the international stage so far in the USA but he is still averaging 1.3 fouls per-game for Venezuela and has committed at least one in all three of his appearances so far.
Herrera plays on the right of a two-man defensive midfield combination for Venezuela and that means he is likely to find himself up against Canada and Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies at regular intervals on Friday.
Davies is a quick player who is capable of drawing challenges, having been fouled five times in three games so far, and that suggests Herrera may pick up his first Copa America booking in this last eight tie.
Canada have only scored one goal so far at the Copa America when Lille hotshot Jonathan David was on target against Peru, and he looks good value to add an assist to his name against Venezuela.
David plays as an out-and-out striker at club level in France but at times he operates almost as a number 10 for his country, supporting Cyle Larin, as he drops into midfield when required. David has 10 assists in 51 games for Canada so he provides one on average every 5.1 games, while at club level his assist-to-games ratio is closer to one in every 10 appearances.
David has been involved at key moments in Canada’s build-up play at the Copa America and looks an interesting pick in the anytime assist market, particularly as he switches between the attacking midfield and centre forward positions when playing for the Canucks.
