Last season's performance

Last season was one of ups and downs for the Vancouver Whitecaps but fans can generally reflect on 2023 as a positive year for the club.

Under the guidance of Vanni Sartini, the Whitecaps once again won the Canadian Championship and in MLS, they managed to finish sixth in the Western Conference.

That was a decent improvement on their ninth-placed finish the season before and the big positives from the campaign were the performances of striker Brian White and attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld, who scored a combined 26 goals.

The Whitecaps, however, fumbled their chance in the playoffs, losing over two legs against Los Angeles FC in round one.

They were hammered 5-2 in California, suggesting that, while the team are heading in the right direction, they are a long way off challenging for the MLS Cup.

The season did, however, feature involvement in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League and there is reason to be optimistic heading into 2024.

This season's prospects

Simply building on last season's foundations will be the focus this year for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The loss of forward Simon Becher is not ideal, while experienced midfielder Russell Teibert has also left the club, but Vancouver should still carry a decent threat with Gauld and White in the side.

Making the playoffs and progressing a little further will likely be the target, while a deeper run in either the Leagues Cup or Concacaf Champions League would also be big for the club.

However, they are not helped by the fact they must play the first six matches of the regular season without manager Sartini after he was sent off and suspended for multiple violations in their last game of 2023.
