Toronto FC: 2024 schedule, players, manager, stadium & more

After a couple of tough years, Toronto FC appointed former Canada manager John Herdman towards the end of the 2023 campaign, a season which saw Toronto finish rock bottom in the Eastern Conference.

So far, there’s been little in terms of moves from Herdman and the team. They have brought in just two players, including Tyrese Spicer, their 23-year-old top pick from this year’s SuperDraft.

Things went wrong for Toronto last term despite them having some good players, so it will be on Herdman to get the best out of this squad.

Given his extensive background as a national team boss, he should be comfortable working with what he’s got. However, he needs to work miracles to make this team competitive again in a short space of time.

Stadium: BMO Field
Manager: John Herdman
Captain: Jonathan Osorio
Top league scorer last season: Federico Bernardeschi

Last season's performance

Last year was one to forget for the Reds, with coach Bob Bradley departing in June after an awful start.

However, things didn’t get much better after he left, with the club losing 13 of their final 14 MLS games to end up with a club-record low of 22 points.

Toronto both fell short in the Canadian Championship and the Leagues Cup at the first hurdle, while they finished with the worst record across all of MLS.

Toronto have now failed to make the postseason for three consecutive seasons, which isn’t sitting well with their passionate support.

The one bright spot was the emergence of striker Deandre Kerr, who scored five times overall last term. He looks like he could become a real hometown favourite going forward, with the 21-year-old likely to play a key role in Herdman’s side.

This season's prospects

There’s little hope of an immediate turnaround for Toronto FC, which is likely based on their lack of offseason activity.

Deiby Flores - a midfielder picked up from Hungarian side Fehervar - is their only addition outside of Spicer.

The Reds head into this campaign +10000 to lift the MLS Cup, the joint-longest odds in the league. That’s not likely to be the aim at BMO Field this season, but Herdman will be tasked with improving on the team’s worst-ever season.

While Toronto had a poor start, they were 11th at the half-way point and just three points shy of a Wild Card berth. Bradley only lasted a few more games and then the wheels came off as they waited for a new manager to take over.

Herdman can at least get them back to their level from the first half of last season, and he has young talent to work with. If he can get something from their underwhelming Italian superstars - Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi - and push into the top seven, that would be a great start to his reign.
