Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews could become the first NHL player since 1993 to finish with at least 70 goals in a season.
Matthews is +300 to score Over 69.5 goals, and he is -400 to finish Under the line.
The 70-goal mark has only been beaten 14 times, with eight different players reaching the milestone. 'The Great One' Wayne Gretzky did it four times, Brett Hull did it three times, and Mario Lemieux did it twice. Phil Esposito, Jari Kurri, Bernie Nicholls, Alexander Mogilny, and Teemu Selanne each did it once.
Matthews has 62 goals with nine games left. He has scored 0.85 goals per game this season, and scoring at that rate over the next nine games would put Matthews right at the Over/Under line of 69.5 goals.
The Leafs schedule to end the season includes some tough teams. They host the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 3, visit the Montreal Canadiens on April 6, host the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 8, visit the New Jersey Devils on April 9, host the Devils on April 11, host the Detroit Red Wings on April 13, visit the Florida Panthers on April 16 and visit the Lightning on April 17.
All of those teams remain in playoff contention, although the Canadiens are a few bad results away from being mathematically eliminated.
The Devils, Canadiens and Red Wings all rank among the worst 10 NHL teams in goals against per game, meaning that Matthews could put up numbers against those teams. Matthews opened the 2023/24 season with a hat trick against the Canadiens, he had two goals against the Lightning in November, and he had another two-goal game recently against the Panthers.
