NHL review: Ducks win six-straight, Maple Leafs skidding

The Anaheim Ducks recorded their sixth-straight win on Sunday night, handing the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights their first regulation loss of the 2023/24 season.

The Dallas Stars are leading the way in a competitive Central Division, while the Vegas Golden Knights have only made one error as they sit top of the Pacific Division to round off the Western Conference overview.

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins are at the Atlantic Division summit and the New York Rangers occupy first place in the Metropolitan Division.

There was plenty of excitement over the past week on the ice and the first talking point takes up to Las Vegas, where the Golden Knights have putting in some sparkling performance to rubber-stamp their position as one of the title favorites.

Ducks flying up the table

The Ducks currently boast the best winning streak in the NHL, with their 4-2 success over the Golden Knights making it six wins on the spin.

That victory followed triumphs over the Columbus Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Arizona Coyotes with this run of results helping Anaheim climb to fourth in the Pacific Division.

Up next for the Ducks, who are +12500 to win the Stanley Cup, is a visit from the Penguins on Tuesday, who they defeated in the second game of their current six-game win streak.

Golden Knights respond in style

Having lost their unbeaten start to the season when going down 4-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks, Stanley Cup holders the Vegas Golden Knights have responded exactly how you would expect of champions.

The Golden Knights chalked up four-straight victories before Sunday's loss to the Ducks, getting the better of the Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche, who were on the receiving end of a 7-0 hammering.

It is exactly what head coach Bruce Cassidy will have wanted to see following that overtime loss to the Blackhawks and Vegas sit top of the Pacific Division, winning 11 of their 12 matches to leave themselves as the +700 favorites to successfully defend their Stanley Cup title.

What has been particularly impressive about the Golden Knights is their attacking play, with their tally of 50 points scored the best in the entire NHL so far this season. William Karlsson has been one of the standout players, recording six goals and nine assists, and he is +8000 to win the Frank J. Selke Trophy.

Toronto on the slide

While there are plenty of teams putting winning streaks together, it is a different story for the Toronto Maple Leafs and they are desperately in need of a victory.

Toronto are four games without a win, losing to Nashville Predators, LA Kings, the Bruins and the Buffalo Sabres, and these results have left them fourth in the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference.

Confidence looks low within the team right now and they are next in action when hosting Tampa Bay Lightning, who are just one place above them in the standings.

Tampa Bay snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators and the Lightning will be hoping to kick on from that result when they travel to Scotiabank Arena.
