Just a couple of weeks ago, it would not appear that an early-season Maple Leafs vs. Jets game in Winnipeg on a Monday night would have much juice. This one sure does though as the Jets look to go 9-0-0 while the Leafs try to avoid going under .500.
This is far from a panic spot for the Leafs, but given their somewhat slow getaway and Winnipeg’s scorching start, the Jets will see Toronto’s best effort.
Even if the Leafs bring their A-game, they have their work cut out for them against this Winnipeg team, and this will be great viewing for hockey fans.
After five wins, it seemed ill-advised to fade the Jets. Now after an 8-0-0 start to the season, the same sentiment remains. Until or unless they prove otherwise, the Jets have been a very reliable play thus far this season.
The Maple Leafs have yet to find their form. They are 4-4-1 which is far from bad just nine games into the season, but their inconsistency and the manner in which they have lost does not lend much confidence in bettors against a red-hot team like the Jets.
Meanwhile, the Jets have scored the second most goals per game in the league and allowed the third least. They have eight players with at least a point per game and a +58 team rating. The Jets are a team to keep riding while they are hot.
If the Jets can indeed win a ninth straight, it will not mean the Maple Leafs go down quietly. After all, Toronto does have one of the best pure goal scorers in the league. Auston Matthews has four goals in his last six games as part of seven points during that span.
Matthews looks to be finding form after a pointless first three games. He centers the top line and is on the top power play. Along with his raw talent, Matthews consistently plays with talented players. He has the chance to score game in and game out. This one is no exception.
In a game which the Maple Leafs may play with a little bit of added urgency, look for the captain to lead the way and get on the score sheet with a goal.
